SERVING AND SEEKING FORGIVENESS
Although she was not in that history, her Indonesian identity cannot be
separated from what Indonesia as a nation did for 24 years in Timor Leste.
Nina Nayoan internship in community development in Timor Leste is inspired
by the story of the tax collector in Luke 18:13 (‘God, be merciful
to me, a sinner!’) “I tried to think of my presence here as
part of my spiritual journey of seeking forgiveness from the Timorese
people.” |

ADVOCATING FOR THE DISFRANCHISED
Each night of 2007, more than 9,000 New York City families with
a total of more than 14,000 children slept in shelters or welfare hotels.
Inbarajah Jeyakumar, a Frontier intern from India, completed his second
year as a social worker with the Jan Hus Presbyterian Church (JHPC) assisting
those that society has thrown out. “Inba worked ceaselessly to help
fellow residents in changing their life habits and to create a more full-fledged
community perspective”, underscores an appraisal of his internship. |

TOURISM AND HIV/AIDS
All studies done on the link between HIV/AIDS and tourism conclude
that increased tourist demand for adventure and romance in the Caribbean
increases sexual contacts between visitors and locals. Through his internship
with the Regional Office of the Latin American and Caribbean YMCA, Jean-Philippe
Twagiramungu of Rwanda tackled the question of how tourism impacts HIV

RAISING AWARENESS OF GENDER DISPARITIES
In a context where Christian churches’ theology emphasizes
individual salvation and reinforces patriarchal attitudes, Paddy Noble’s
internship raised awareness of gender disparities in Cambodia and found
ways to address these issues as part of the ongoing program of the Cambodia
Student Christian Mission and other local organizations. He also worked
in villages to initiate discussions and storytelling about gender issues
within these communities. |

PILGRIMAGES FOR TRANSFORMATION
How to develop a model of tourism that is more beneficial to
the local community? How to promote a responsible behavior by tourists?
These questions, valid in many contexts, acquire greater relevance in
the lands where Palestinians and Israelis have lived and fought each other
over the past six decades. Those are some of the key issues that the Pilgrimages
for Transformation project has been addressing, with the participation
of Swiss Frontier intern Regula Kaufmann. |
