FIGHTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING: A CHALLENGE TO THE CHURCHES
The Mexico-Guatemala border is a unique region with a constant
influx of mostly Central American migrants —those who move to the
North to pursue their dearest dreams and those who travel south to return
to their places of origin with stories of failure and success. Luis Flores,
a Frontier intern from Guatemala, is placed in Tapachula, not far from
the Suchiate River, where smuggling of goods and human beings takes place
day after day under customs officials’ noses. |

CONFLICTS CONTRIBUTE TO SPREADING HIV
“During all the workshops and consultations that I have
contributed to, both at national and regional levels, it has transpired
that violent conflicts play an important role in the spreading of HIV
in Africa”, writes Bertrand Tietcheu from Cameroon. Through his
internship he has conducted research and resourced the work of the West
Africa Regional Office of the Ecumenical HIV/AIDS Initiative in Africa
(EHAIA), located in Accra, Ghana. |

OPPOSING MILITARISM
Recent conflicts in the Balkans, particularly in the former Yugoslavia,
have been frequently attributed to ethnicity and religious factors. Religious
symbols and language have been used and abused by the fighting parties.
In this context, Frontier intern Rachel Long, from the United States,
describes as the greatest achievement of her internship in 2007 her educational
work on religious pacifism and progressive religion. |

HUMAN RIGHTS AND PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED PEOPLE
In a context of widespread and chronic poverty, a shortage of
public services, and limited educational opportunities, Haitian people
with disabilities are severely disadvantaged. A key element in Cuban Frontier
interns Ezequiel Batista and Yaniurka Mosquera has been “to tell
pastors and church leaders that mission with and among people with disabilities
is recognizing their rights, empowering them and transforming our churches
into truly inclusive communities”. |

INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE AND PEACEMAKING IN ASIA
“A basic thrust of religion is to nurture life and create
societies for human beings to live in harmony with one another and nature.”
Frontier intern Eddy Cahyana, from Indonesia, has explored fundamental
principles and practices that nourish both peaceful coexistence and cooperation
on social issues among the different religions in Thailand as a way to
address exclusive and intolerant religious fundamentalism that is fuelling
conflicts in Asia today. |
